Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions, originating before the Neolithic period. This wonderful creative art is alive and well in Stanthorpe. Stanthorpe Pottery Club has been a place where people have come together, to learn and share their skills for 50 years.
The 2020 exhibition A Space Within is a collection of works that are inspired by the opportunity to create art from space.
Regardless of using either wheel throwing or sculpting techniques, the Potter starts out with a lump of clay. The clay is put on the wheel, centered, and opened up to start creating.
The shape of the vessel is dependent on how that space is manipulated by pushing out and stretching the clay wall while supporting the outside. The use of the space that was created remains a mystery to the creator.
Sculptors and hand builders create the "A Space Within" to assist with shaping the work, drying, and overall weight.
This mystery is given to the audience.
