About the Artist

Born in 1947, Lloyd Gawura Hornsby is a proud Koori artist and descendant of the NSW Yuin People. His lifelong journey in art began in childhood and has evolved into a distinctive style rooted in intricate detail—all of which converge in Coming Home to convey memory, emotion, and the powerful threads of kinship.

Gawura never paints on location; instead, he draws from memory, cultural knowledge, and observation. In Coming Home, that method becomes a metaphor for his journey—honouring his lineage while continuing to walk forward. His canvases, alive with the visual language of Dreaming, speak to 60,000 years of culture, and to the modern experience of an Aboriginal man reflecting on his place within it.

Now in his late seventies, Gawura describes his practice as a continuing act of learning: Through the passing down of stories, history and life experiences.  That knowledge is the foundation of his art.
