Kent Saddlery

Scenes From The Outback

In February 2021 it was exhilarating to watch the Kent Saddlery COMET windmill sails slowly being lifted by crane, bolted securely to the windmill base and then, gradually begin to turn!

We remember 2021 as “the Year of the Windmill”.

The 30 foot circle of sails continues to spin; the windmill pumping recycled water to and from a nearby tank.

Following Lyle and Helen’s final outback cattle station Trip in 2021 and back at the Kent Saddlery base at Stanthorpe, 2022 became “the Year of the Mural”.

Early in 2022, a desire to incorporate an outback scene to complement the COMET Windmill was fulfilled. Two talented mural artists, DRAPL and THE ZOOKEEPER embraced the vision and combined their skills to create an interesting and dramatic fence painting.

Please come and enter the scene…

Ride along on horseback through a Western Australian landscape, accompanied by Lyle Kent and seasoned Kimberley cattleman, Mike Shaw. Join up with a Northern Territory horsewoman as she brings cattle to a watering hole.

Pause at an ancient Boab tree; take in the grandeur of distant escarpments before absorbing the history surrounding a set of crumbling cattle yards and a distant boundary rider’s hut.

Be ready to marvel at the approach of a red-orange dust storm, watched overhead by a solitary eagle and from the ground, a huge Channel Country lizard.

All travellers on the New England Highway at Stanthorpe are welcome to pull in and enjoy the sights and sounds of the COMET windmill and the outback mural.

In addition, travellers are invited to have their lunch or a cuppa at covered picnic tables, where nearby their children can feed the friendly farm animals, hold the chooks and engage in some free leather stamping.

The Retail Store is open 8am til 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am til 4pm on Saturday. Closed Sunday.

“Come in and smell the leather.”
